How to do the twist

Everyone loves a good twist in a story.
Twists are fun to read. They're fun to write.
Heck, the premise of my recently completed manuscript was based on a twist!

It can be tempting to conjure up a twist to include in your story, regardless of whether incorporating the device adds to the continuity and depth of your work.

Resist this temptation. Don't add a twist just for the sake of boasting a nifty gimmick. If the twist comes gift-wrapped with your original idea, then by all means, craft it, polish it, make it shine. But if this is not the case, then find the unique aspects of your story on which you can lavish your loving attentions. Your tale deserves it! And so do your readers.
