Day #16, 2015

Into the woods,
Without delay,
But careful not
To lose the way.
Into the woods,
Who knows what may
Be lurking on the journey?

(One guess what song's been stuck in my head the last month!)

When you love someone, you want to take care of them and keep them from harm. But with your beloved characters, this is exactly what you must not do. Rather, for their own sake, as well as that of your story, you must put at least your lead character in some sort of precarious position, if not downright peril.

Your readers want to see your protagonist face up to adversity, come what may. They want to see your character grow and evolve in some way, and preferably overcome incredible odds to emerge victorious. So go ahead, let your main character lose a loved one or find herself shipwrecked on a cannibal-occupied island. Instill in your readers the overpowering urge to turn that page and see what happens next!
